Connections:
NZ+piracy?
Smuggling (points (into NZ))?
Italian connection? (while the Scots came to NZ all the Italians went to Scotland, are pizzarias popular?)
Icemen=antarctic penguins, penguin army boarded the JRC ship?
Or that scene from GoT where the Night's King's army beats up the guys from the ships?

Wow - what a match. Congrats to the Icemen!
Was supposed to change my lineup for my league match and completely forgot Rolled out top team on normal and steamrolled them...at the cost of energy...le sigh.

Here it goes..ivelostmysparky wrote:You should write the article donkey. It would be sweet as.

The Icemen came, and how!
New Zealand is the iconic rugby nation, I believe few people would disagree. The Super Rugby, the legendary Haka, and of course its national team, all form part of the almost mythical rugby culture of the two Islands. Going to New Zealand to play a season of rugby is the closest thing to a pilgrimage a rugby player can perform (hell, I've done it myself). The fact that the All Blacks also dominate international rugby, only adds to it all.
BR is no different. The game was developed in New Zealand, by kiwis, and some of the highest ranking clubs in the world, like Melville RFC, Hercufleas United and Sparker, are all from NZ. Not to mention season 27's astonishing transfer, razorbladeYfronts' ever name-changing club Intelijunt Dezine.
Therefore, it was with limited surprise, but great anticipation, that the BR World watched the last few seasons all-dominating manager Batmancagone steer his Jolly Roger Crew (JRC) from the English Premiership down to New Zealand's Division II.2.
The crew's arrival sparked some different reactions. A few Kia Ora's could be heard, some arranged hakas as the ship approached the shore, while others asked themselves why Batman's Pirate Crew had sailed all the way to NZ? Had the English stopped being a challenge, was the weather to blame, or had the pirates a different kind of booty in mind?
As the NZ teams wouldn't be much better than the English and the weather in BR is the same everywhere, most agreed the answer to that question laid elsewhere. And that the answer could be found among those high ranked clubs mentioned three paragraphs up, and their ranking points.
Prior to the events described here, the Jolly Roger Crew had reached the highest number of ranking points in BR's history, 99.0653 (it's published on the JRC's club news, as a memory of greatness past?). It was an impressive accomplishment that Batman nevertheless felt could be improved upon, and as ranking points can only be won from clubs that are fairly equal to your own, Batman set the JRC's sails to NZ. Well, at least that is what many people believe. Problem was it didn't start well.
Few managers can hope to be able to beat Batman on a good day. InstableTatoo (IT), the manager of 3ème Age, is one of them. Not that it happens frequently, as a matter of fact, it had only happened once, back in season 27. But that had been a WCC game, where no ranking points are exchanged. What was about to happen on round 2 of this season was something else. IT's 3ème Age beat Batman's JRC 36-10 in the IGTWCC and ran away with 0.45 ranking points. Not much, you say. True, but it hadn't happened for quite a while, and it wasn't the start of the NZ season Batman had hoped for.
And then came the Icemen.
JRC's first season in NZ was all about beating up on his opponents and promote to Division 1. And to win the Cup, of course. JRC had won its national cup every season since season 19. This one was supposed to add the 11th straight Cup Gold to its cabinett, making the total 16. When JRC drew the Icemen in round 5, everyone thought is was a done deal. NZ stats-wizard Bren ran some complicated algorithm that gave the JRC a 100% chance of winning. The math concluded with people's opinions, JRC would win and win and win, until a final against some other top team would come about.
The Icemen, managed by cornerflag, had never made much noise. The highest honour achieved was a Division III.9 Gold back in season 26. But they were about to propel themselves into the forefront of everyone's attention.
The game starts like no-one had thought. The Icemen scores a penalty, then a try, and then another penalty, and another! After 14 minutes the Icemen are up 16-0! But JRC pushes on, has a try disallowed in minute 17 but scores in the 19th. 16-7. Two minutes later, another JRC try. 16-14, and in the 28th minute JRC takes the lead with a penalty, 16-17. Order restored.  But then the play goes off script again, and the Icemen score their second try in the 35th minute, making the it 23-17! A late penalty to JRC marks the half-time score at 23-20. But by now, this game has started to turn a few heads. What is about to happen?
The second half sees the Icemen off again with a drop-goal, 26-20 in the 42 minute, and 5 minutes later a penalty adds 3 more home points, 29-20! In the 52 minute JRC scores again though, making it 29-27, and a 59th minute penalty turns the lead again, 29-30. Six minutes later another penalty, 29-33. But the Icemen refuses to admit defeat, and score their third try with 8 minutes left on the clock. The conversion is off and the score is 34-33!
The ending becomes a duel between fly-halves, and is little short of epic.
In minute 73, JRC's No.10 Aiden Edmonds attempts a drop-goal and misses it just. The following drop-out by Icemen's fly-half Jerome Tebow gets blown off by the referee when several of his teammates run past him before the kick. Scrum to JRC and Edmonds get a second go at that drop goal in the 75th minute and nails it! 34-36! Is this it?
What happens next begs belief. With the restart at half-way, Tebow hangs it high enough for his No.8 to reclaim it. Several phases later Tebow get in position and scores a drop-goal, his second, to make the score 37-36 with two minutes and a half to go! Those remaining minutes are nail biting, but the Icemen hold the Pirates off, and the whistle goes.
Â
The Icemen did what no-one had thought they could even dream of doing, and the Jolly Roger Crew is not among the teams in round 6 of the season 29 Cup, that kicks off later today. That has never, in the history of BR, happened before. JRC has always reached at least round 6 in the cup, since season 1. Isn't that astonishing? And yes, JRC had to give away 2.5 of those shining ranking points too.
So what does this mean? It will probably cause some slight financial damage, but probably nothing that JRC's coffers can't cover. It will also set back Batman's plans of reaching 100 ranking points. The loss cannot be recovered until the end of next season probably, and who knows what could happen until then? Will this in fact mark the beginning of the end of JRC's domination? Doubtfully, it might just as well add more fuel to the tactical genius and ambition of Batmancagone.
But we do know one thing. The Icemen came, and how!

Re: Season 29 Discussion
Actually quite interesting tracking the chances of the Binge-Drinking Ballbags to win Round 8 and make the Elite Eight.
Near the start of the season, I put those chances pretty low at 1.27%, it didn't change much from there going to 1.54%, 2,13%, and 1.03% (my model didn't fancy their chances of beating the Red Sox). But with this win and the favourable draw, their chances have gone up to 14.32%. Near about the same chance it gave them of beating the New Lynn Red Sox.

There is a definite benefit to being div three as you can have a Crack without too much energy concern.

This is my worse campaign ever for injuries in energy matches. A huge amount of the team has been knocked out with 20+ point deductions post-game.

@razorbladeYfronts you are now the Ranfurly Shield owner, I believe it is a first time for you.
Beware because it adds +2 to the target the holder has on his back and on top of that defending it causes addiction (except for rob who apparently is really happy to give it away right after getting hold of it)

Re: Season 29 Discussion
We took a couple of big hits a while back - our old Offsite suddenly went dark when the site hosting it suddenly closed down - the amount of data and information stored there that we lost was actually devastating.
On top of that we had a fairly large exodus of players - either to become inactive farms for a while (like me) or fully leaving the game. The combined reduction in traffic and resulting increase in apathy caused the OS to go dark for while.
Eventually it picked up, though, and we're starting to get closer to where we once were - but I don't think we'll ever reach the heights on the international scene that we once had. We may well win a WC again, but not with the level of dominance that we had once upon a time.

@razorbladeYfronts,
Since you are a hairs-breadth from Batman's Holy Grail, how soon are you really planning that evening ride west?
