Terrorism, zika, poor organization, despicable facilities....

Re: Rio Olympics
I agree, I'm not hopeful for a particularly great games. Hopefully the athletes can rise above it and provide us with some moments.
i absolutely adored the Olympics as a kid but it's lost a lot of it's shine in recent years.

The Olympics and football WCs have really gone downhill since I was a wee nipper.

Re: Rio Olympics
There was definitely a different air about it all in the 80s and 90s.
China had all the pollution and human rights issues and Rio has got pollution, crime, zika, and of course Russia.
That being said - I think London did a damn good job 4 years ago

Re: Rio Olympics
I think time is a major contributor to that list. The longer it takes to complete the lower they score. Golf, team equestrian, the walking all take a while.

100 meters is over in 10 seconds. The exception being beach volleyball but I don't mind them taking their time

Re: Rio Olympics
Try paying for airline tickets to Brazil during European holiday time and having to renew family passports over there. Everything is over a month behind (without bribes).

Re: Rio Olympics
I think Eliza McCartney's Bronze is my favorite of the games. Partly because I actually got to watch it live and partly because of quotes like this:
"The bronze medal is one of the best ones because you just snuck in there and you're stoked"
She's 5 years younger than anyone else in that final. Hoping for some golden moments in the future from her.

Re: Rio Olympics
All the "surprise" medals were so great. You compare her elation at getting Bronze (as well as the likes of Rooney and Jones with their Silvers) to the Women's 7s team's disappointment. Sure, expectation comes into it, but it really does change the dynamics.
Reminds me of Jerry Seinfeld's comment about the Silver medal being the worst one though:

I have a problem with that silver medal. Because when you think about it,you win the gold - you feel good, you win the bronze - you think, "Well, at least I got something". But when you win that silver it's like, "Congratulations, you *almost* won. Of all the losers *you* came in first of that group. You're the number one *loser*. No one lost ahead of you!"
