Re: Chat thread
But what about the other way round, when they come over to live? I suppose they'd need a very thick skin (treated last in A+E on Saturday nights etc.)?

Re: Chat thread
I think Asians would be more worried about abuse if they come to NZ to live. Or anyone that isn't white.

No. I'm just saying that an Australian would have nothing to worry about.

Except for an unknown number of fish and potentially some sea-living mammals, I believe the answer is yes.

This is amazing
Newshub: Clamped cars and turf wars on upmarket Auckland street. This is the original video about this topic, it's 7 minutes long but you can skip it by reading these two articles about this which are the true gems.
The Spinoff: The incredibly weird tale behind the Bashford Antiques clamping story
The Spinoff: WTF is going on at Bashford Antiques part two – a mysterious Organ
Anyway, utterly bizarre story. Worth a read.

Re: Chat thread
lol he is a count alright.
Most humans are right-handed and also have better vision in their right eye. Add to this, the most dangerous type of accident is a head-on collision so it actually makes the most sense to drive on the kiwi side. Someone told me this once. Not sure if it's true.

Heh.
Anyway, totally different tack but what celebrity does Damien McKenzie remind you all of? There's someone on the tip of my tongue but I can't quite get there.

Jeez, Chewy. Show your age.
I can see it, but that's not whomever I'm thinking of as I see Ron Howard as the director of crappy overwrought Oscar-bait films rather than as an actor.

Ahh so she is from Palmerston. I read the first article on the Stuff website and the name of the small town was deliberately left out. I was guessing Gore, but small-town East Otago isn't so different. Damien McKenzie grew up in Southland so is somewhat related to the story.
I agree that women would generally have different roles and wouldn't stand around the BBQ sinking piss and talking about rugby and horse racing, but women having "no value" is simply not true. In small towns in the country some women do enjoy traditionally masculine activities, and are certainly encouraged to join in. I imagine you would find similar in small-town rural USA (but far less about Jesus in NZ). A clip from the annual Speight's Perfect Woman competition.

Re: Chat thread
Agree with sparky on this, although I know plenty of women who love to stand around the BBQ sinking piss and talking about rugby...
It seems to me that the media at the moment are hell bent on 'branding' rural new Zealand as being homophobic, sexist, racist ect ect. It's bullshit in my opinion. Rural people definitely tend to hold more traditional values than the urban population, and are more skeptical (for lack of a better term) of changes to society and culture, but we're not the hate fueled pack of animals the media in Auckland seem to want us to be

Re: Chat thread
It's a shame that articles like that and others (one earlier this week suggested we all should be vegan) are so highly publicised and put on the main stuff page. The only purpose they serve is to further isolate small town nz and rural communities. This article is written by someone with personal experience and I can not comment on her hardships but others are opinion pieces written with no facts yet published as news.
I know a great many highly educated people who write articles and submit them to newspapers. Articles based on facts or stated clearly as opinion but these only ever see the light of day in rural, limited distribution paper based media. The thing that annoys me most is news now needs to get hits or high ratings to be considered news worthy rather than being factual information about current events or issues that may have considerable effects on us in the near future.
Rant rant rant.
